How to Use an LG Top Loader Washing Machine

Serving St Augustine Beach, Ponte Vedra, St. John’s, Green Cove Springs, and more!

We hear a lot of concerns about the low water level on LG’s top-loading washers. Many new product owners wonder how a washing machine with NO AGITATOR & VERY LOW WATER LEVELS can actually clean their clothes.

This resource will help answer some of the most common questions about how to use the LG top loader washing machine.

How to Use an LG Top Load Washing Machine

The first step to learning how to use an LG top loader washing machine is to get rid of any preconceived notions about how a washer should work. Seriously!

NOTE: If you think that a full tub of water and an entire cup of soap is the best way to clean clothes, then don’t skip the first section about how LG top-loading washers work.

Follow these guidelines to learn how to operate your LG washer:

How LG Top Load Washers Work

It’s important to understand how your LG washer works, especially if you’ve never used a washing machine without an agitator. Understanding how your machine operates will save you from a lot of confusion.

Let’s take a look inside!

As soon as you open the lid to your new LG top load washer, you’ll notice that there is no agitator. Instead, LG’s HE top loaders use a high efficiency impeller at the base of the washer drum.

LG’s 6 Motion Direct Drive Technology moves the wash drum in multiple directions depending on the selected wash cycle.

This technology makes LG’s top load washer gentler on clothes than conventional washers all while cutting energy costs and water consumption.

Is there enough water in my LG top load washer?

Consumers who’ve never used a top loading washer with direct drive technology are likely to have concerns about water level when making the switch.

Conventional washing machine tubs will fill nearly to the top with water. HE Top Loaders with Direct Drive Technology, on the other hand, do NOT fill with water. This may leave you wondering, “Is my washer filling up with enough water to clean my clothes?”

Generally, the answer is YES!

Your LG top load washer is designed to use less water. The machine’s wash cycle uses agitating motions with specifically timed water jets to deep clean clothing. This means that the tub does not need to fill with water to clean the clothes properly.

Are my clothes getting clean enough?

Under typical conditions, your clothes are getting clean enough with the lower water level setting. There are a few situations where you may want to change the washer settings to accommodate heavily soiled fabrics:

Washing cloth diapers or fabrics soiled with pet urine: For clothes that are soiled with any material you want to completely rinse away (like urine), we recommend running two separate wash cycles. The 1st cycle will rinse away soil; the 2nd cycle will clean the fabrics.

  • Step 1: Run the fabrics through the Speed Cycle to rinse away urine and/or other heavy soil.
  • Step 2: Run a second cycle of your choice to clean the clothes.

Stains that require soaking. If you have a heavily soiled load, use the LG Prewash setting. You can also choose one of the special wash cycles including Deep Wash or Sanitary for, especially dirty loads.

Heavy fabrics. Heavier fabrics can be washed using the Heavy Duty or Bedding settings. This will ensure enough water is added to clean thicker and bulkier fabrics.

How to Add More Water to LG Top Load Washer

OK, you get it! LG top load washers don’t fill up with water. But, what do you do when you want to fill the tub with more water?

Most LG top load washers have a “Water Plus” button that will allow you to increase the water level of the load.

Under normal operation, this feature won’t be necessary.

What Kind of Laundry Detergent Should I Use?

High efficiency (HE) detergents are specially formulated for HE washers. It is vital that you use HE Laundry Detergent!

Most laundry detergents these days are formulated for HE machines. Here are a few options on Amazon:
